Those ensembles known currently to be active have their frequencies shown in bold. Ensembles believed still to be pending are shown in normal type.

Broadcasters will often increase the bit rate of services for the transmission of an important or prestigious event, and similarly decrease the bit rates in order to accomodate additional services. Where more than one bit rate is shown the occasional value is the one given in brackets.

The graphics are "snapshots" of the status of an ensemble at a particular moment in time. Some ensembles are fairly static and their arrangement will change only rarely. Others are more dynamic, changing several times daily.

The Mode Indicator illuminates to indicate the ensemble transmission mode. If the transmission mode is not known, the indicator will be off or not present.

The TII indicator illuminates when an ensemble has been observed or is known to be transmitting the Transmitter Identification Information. Where an ensemble has been observed not to radiate TII codes, the indicator will be off. If the indicator is not shown, no information has been received or no observations have been made to determine the presence or otherwise of TII codes.

The figures in the snapshots correspond to the Protection Levels of the services where known.

Different fonts are used for those fields which represent the actual text content of Service Labels observed or reported, e.g. R-WIEN * DAB, and those listings where the the entry is based on other data or is the name of a Service which may or may not correspond exactly with the Service Label, e.g. P4 København.

It is a convention in computer literature and on other DAB sites to represent a space, " ", as an underscore, "_". However the underscore is a computer character in its own right and exists within the character set from which Service Labels may be formed. Furthermore, the underscore has been observed actually in use in Service Labels, e.g. PICCADILLY_KEY. Therefore, this site will use the convention that a space represents a space, and an underscore always represents an underscore. Please let me know if any listings here are at odds with this policy.

Please send information and observations to: carey@wohnort.demon.co.uk

Hong Kong

DAB transmissions reappeared in the Special Administrative Region in 2004, this time using Band III. The previous trial, using L-band, was switched off on June 12th 2001, well after the end of the official test period. It is understood that the Band III ensemble in Guandong province on the mainland is sometimes receivable in the west of the territory. This was not achieved when attempted February 2002. The Band III DAB trials were suspended on February 8th until further notice.

Malaysia

Planning for DAB in Malaysia is on the basis of two national SFNs (one in Band III and one in L-band) and two regional networks (again one in Band III and another in L-band) The first pilot phase is for a Band III multiplex in Kuala Lumpur with a second pilot in Johore Bahru (a city bordering Singapore).

No DAB ensembles were observed in Kuala Lumpur in June 2001.

New Zealand

New Zealand has adopted the Eureka-147 system for digital sound broadcasting. When spectrum was originally allocated, the Canadian L-band channel raster was adopted and the spectrum corresponds to Channels 8 to 20 under the Canadian scheme. The Canadian numbering has been retained for the New Zealand allotments.

The broadcasters, however, would prefer to use Band III, but the spectrum involved is currently being used by analogue television. This will cease either when digital take-up reaches two-thirds, or 2012, whichever is the sooner. Under consideration is temporary use of a military sub-band, 230 - 240 MHz, until the lower frequencies can be cleared. The tests currently underway in Auckland use a frequency at the upper end of the military sub-band. The New Zealand channel raster being used corresponds to that in use elsewhere, but the New Zealand numbering is different. Block NZ 11C, for example, corresponds to Block 12C in Europe. However the military sub-band was not included in that numbering scheme, and therefore Wohnort lists that frequency by its internationally-known equivalent, Block 13F. Wohnort will use the NZ prefix to denote the New Zealand channels - eg Block NZ 5B (= 6B). Wohnort predicts that insofar as the digital radio audience concerns itself at all with frequencies and channels, some listener confusion is likely, since those receivers that display channel numbers will more likely than not display the non-NZ numbering.
