Explanatory Notes

Those ensembles known currently to be active have their frequencies shown in bold. Ensembles believed still to be pending are shown in normal type.

Broadcasters will often increase the bit rate of services for the transmission of an important or prestigious event, and similarly decrease the bit rates in order to accomodate additional services. Where more than one bit rate is shown the occasional value is the one given in brackets.

The graphics are "Snapshots" of the status of an ensemble at the particular moment when the Snapshot was taken. Some ensembles are fairly static and their arrangement will change only rarely. Others are more dynamic, changing several times daily. The Snapshots are illustrative. An unchanged Snapshot should not exclude the possibility that the configuration may since have changed. The timing of a Snapshot update is more likely to be due to the opportunity arising to take a new one rather than the ensemble's configuration having just changed.

Note that in a Snapshot, the boundary between one service and the next contributes to the overall width of the graphic in a manner which varies from one browser to another. A Snapshot with more services will appear slightly wider that a Snapshot with fewer services, but the overall capacity of the two ensembles is the same.

The Mode Indicator illuminates to indicate the ensemble transmission mode. If the transmission mode is not known, the indicator will be off or not present.

The TII indicator illuminates when an ensemble has been observed or is known to be transmitting the Transmitter Identification Information. Where an ensemble has been observed not to radiate TII codes, the indicator will be off. If the indicator is not shown, no information has been received or no observations have been made to determine the presence or otherwise of TII codes.

The figures in the snapshots correspond to the Protection Levels of the services where known. A lower number offers more robust reception than a higher number, Protection Level 1 being the maximum Protection.

The padlock symbol indicates a Conditional Access (encrypted) service.

Different fonts are used for those fields which represent the actual text content of Service Labels observed or reported, e.g. R-WIEN * DAB, and those listings where the the entry is based on other data or is the name of a Service which may or may not correspond exactly with the Service Label, e.g. P4 København.

It is a convention in computer literature and on some other DAB sites to represent a space, " ", as an underscore, "_". However the underscore is a computer character in its own right and exists within the character set from which Service Labels may be formed. Furthermore, the underscore has been observed actually in use in Service Labels, e.g. PICCADILLY_KEY. Therefore, this site will use the convention that a space represents a space, and an underscore always represents an underscore. Please let me know if any listings here are at odds with this policy.

Some Service Labels have been observed to have leading spaces. However, while some receivers display the leading spaces, it appears that others ignore them. In view of the number of sources for this site, the variety of observation methods used and the difficulty in representing clearly those leading spaces across all web browsers, this site will ignore leading spaces in Ensemble Labels and Service Labels.

The Programme Type is transmitted as a number. The receiver produces a Programme Type label recalled from a table stored within it. The Programme Types indicated on this site follow as much as possible the descriptions in the Registered Tables, ETSI TS 101 756 v1.1.1. Receivers differ in their implementations and how they display the PTy label. For example, some receivers display a PTy "MOR Music". This site uses the description "Easy Listening", which is to be found in the Registered Tables. A number of Services use the PTy which is displayed on some receivers as "Varied". In the Registered Tables, this PTy is further described as "Varied Speech", which implies a completely different style of programme. This site follows the Registered Tables and lists some Services as being "Varied Speech", although their programme style may be mainly music. Note also that there is a separate PTy table for North America. A receiver from outside North America being used there may display inappropriate labels and vice versa. For example, a receiver which did not "know" that it was in North America could display the "Rhythm and Blues" PTy as "Weather"! This site shows, wherever possible, the PTy that would be displayed on the appropriate receiver.

Any Service which carries a flag is known to be a Secondary Component of the Service listed above it. Services which are listed twice, once with the flag and once without, such as BBC 5LIVE SportX, are known to be signalled in the ensemble as both Primary and Secondary Service Components. Other listings will be modified as information becomes available.

The absence of data services in a particular snapshot does not necessarily mean that no data services are present in that ensemble. The services may not reveal themselves according to the observation methods being used. Also, no account is taken of the presence or otherwise of PAD or NPAD, which is outside the scope of these listings.

A blank area within or at the right of a Snapshot indicates unused capacity within the ensemble.
